History

Zagarrón, wines and wineries, based in the municipality of Mota del Cuervo (Cuenca) in the heart of La Mancha, was created in 1948 by a group of wine growers who decided to join forces and make wine together. The winery has, of course, evolved over the years and today its 615 wine growers work more than 6,300 hectares of vines.

In addition to having vineyards in the La Mancha D.O., our winery produces Tierra de Castilla IGP/PGI and varietal wines. We also produce Sangria and Non-Alcoholic Beverages from fermented grapes.

Zagarrón, Vinos y Viñedos remains totally committed to the environment, as well as to its social responsibility policy, which is a source of great motivation to our employees, partners and consumers.

Thanks to the excellent reputation that the winery has built up over the years, it has been able to increase its bottled wine sales in Spain and reaffirm its presence in international markets, where 85% of the production is sold. The wines are exported to the United States, Canada, China, Japan, France, Sweden, Belgium, Poland and other European countries.

Production

The computerization of all the processes and the supervision provided by the winery’s technical team guarantees the production of high-quality wines that meet consumer requirements.

The harvesting starts when the grapes reach perfect maturity. Each variety is unloaded into its own hopper and de-stalked, crushed and pumped into maceration tanks.

This is followed by the pressing in pneumatic presses which ensures that the white or red musts are of first-class quality. The white wine musts are floated before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, while the reds undergo their malolactic and alcoholic fermentation simultaneously.

The wine is stored in 103 tanks, with capacities ranging from 5,000 to 1,100,000 litres. The finishing processes include centrifugation, diatomaceous filtration, tangential filtration, membrane filtration and the use of a horizontal centrifugal separator for the lees.

The winery’s barrel room is home to our perfectly-conditioned American and French oak barrels for the ageing of our wines. We also have a bottling line with a capacity of 1,500 bottles per hour where we can apply either standard corks or Stelvin screw caps. From here, the bottled wines go into our 1,000 m2 warehouse, where they remain until their release for sale.

Facilities

The strategic plan launched in 2005 has turned the winery into one of our region’s most modern. In our new 140,000 m2 facilities, where we use a combination of technology and innovation, we can produce an average of over 500,000 hectolitres of wine and musts each year.

Through the use of the most advanced and adapted equipment and production techniques, we have been able to produce wines of world-class quality. This quality is being increasingly appreciated and recognised by wine drinkers in Spain and international markets who have remained loyal to Zagarrón, Vinos y Viñedos for many years.
